Common Language Description

The CPT® Code 80338 refers to a laboratory test specifically designed to measure the levels of antidepressants that are not otherwise specified. This test is crucial for monitoring the therapeutic levels of various antidepressant medications in patients who are undergoing treatment for depression. Among the medications that can be assessed through this test are serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) such as venlafaxine, commonly known by its brand name Effexor, and desvenlafaxine, marketed as Pristiq. These medications are primarily prescribed to alleviate symptoms of depression and can be quantitatively analyzed in serum or plasma using advanced techniques like liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Additionally, the SNRI duloxetine, branded as Cymbalta, is utilized not only for treating depression but also for managing chronic pain, and it too can be evaluated through similar laboratory methods. Furthermore, atypical antidepressants such as bupropion, known as Wellbutrin, which is used for depression and to assist with smoking cessation, and trazodone, recognized for its efficacy as a sleep aid, can also be tested in serum or plasma using quantitative liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. This comprehensive testing approach ensures that healthcare providers can effectively monitor and adjust antidepressant therapy based on the specific needs of their patients.
