The CPT® Code 90669 refers to the pneumococcal conjugate vaccine, specifically the 7 valent formulation (PCV7), which is intended for intramuscular use. Vaccines, such as this pneumococcal conjugate vaccine, are designed to provide active, long-term immunity by stimulating the recipient's immune system. This is achieved by introducing altered versions of specific bacteria, which in this case are the pneumococcal bacteria. When administered, the vaccine prompts the immune system to produce its own antibodies against these bacteria, enabling the body to recognize and respond more effectively upon future exposure to the actual pathogens. Pneumococcal bacteria are commonly found in the nasal passages and throats of many individuals without causing any illness. However, if these bacteria invade the body, they can lead to serious health conditions such as pneumococcal pneumonia, bacteremia, and meningitis. Certain populations, including children under the age of 5, the elderly, and individuals with compromised immune systems, are particularly vulnerable to these infections. The 7 valent vaccine specifically targets seven distinct serotypes of the pneumococcal bacterium, which are designated as 4, 6B, 9V, 14, 18C, 19F, and 23F. It is important to note that this vaccine is administered via a separately reportable intramuscular injection. For broader coverage, the 13 valent vaccine (CPT® Code 90670) includes the same seven serotypes as well as six additional serotypes, expanding the protective benefits against pneumococcal disease.
