Common Language Description

A laboratory test known as CPT® Code 82465 is utilized to measure the total cholesterol levels present in serum or whole blood. Cholesterol is a waxy, fat-like steroid substance that is an essential component of cell membranes across all body tissues and organs. The body primarily synthesizes cholesterol, with a smaller portion obtained through dietary sources. This lipid plays a crucial role in the formation of hormones that are vital for growth, development, and reproductive functions. Additionally, cholesterol is involved in the production of bile acids, which are necessary for the digestion of food and the absorption of nutrients. Elevated levels of cholesterol in the bloodstream can indicate an increased risk for cardiovascular diseases and strokes. Furthermore, certain individuals may possess a genetic predisposition that leads to elevated cholesterol levels. The test is performed by obtaining a blood sample, which can be collected through a separately reportable venipuncture or a fingerstick method. The analysis of serum, plasma, and whole blood is conducted using a quantitative enzymatic method to ensure accurate measurement of cholesterol levels.
