Common Language Description

The CPT® Code 83540 refers to the laboratory test for measuring iron levels in the body, which can be performed on blood, urine, or liver samples. Iron (Fe) is a vital mineral that plays a crucial role in various physiological functions, primarily by forming a part of hemoglobin in red blood cells (RBCs) and myoglobin in muscle cells. Hemoglobin is responsible for transporting oxygen throughout the body, while myoglobin helps store oxygen in muscle tissues. The measurement of iron levels is essential for diagnosing conditions related to iron metabolism, such as iron deficiency anemia, which occurs when there is insufficient iron to produce adequate hemoglobin, leading to a decrease in red blood cell production. Conversely, elevated iron levels can indicate potential health issues, such as excessive iron intake from supplements or genetic disorders like hemochromatosis, which is linked to mutations in the RGMc or HAMP genes. The testing process involves obtaining a blood sample through venipuncture, which is a separately reportable procedure. The serum or plasma from the blood sample is analyzed using quantitative spectrophotometry. Additionally, urine tests can be conducted using either a random voided specimen or a 24-hour collection, analyzed through quantitative inductively coupled plasma/emission spectrometry. It is important for patients to wait 2-4 days after receiving iodine or gadolinium contrast media before collecting a urine specimen to ensure accurate results. In cases where liver iron levels are assessed, a liver tissue sample is obtained through a separately reportable procedure and tested using quantitative inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry.
