The CPT® Code 84275 refers to a laboratory test that measures the levels of sialic acid in the blood. Sialic acid, scientifically known as N-Acetylneuraminic acid, is a derivative of neuraminic acid, which is a type of monosaccharide. This compound plays a significant role in various biological processes, particularly in the metabolism of certain proteins and fats. The measurement of sialic acid levels is particularly important in diagnosing and monitoring sialic acid storage diseases, which are genetic disorders caused by an autosomal recessive mutation. In these conditions, the body is unable to properly metabolize sialic acid, leading to elevated levels in the bloodstream. To perform this test, a blood sample is collected through a procedure known as venipuncture, which is separately reportable. The serum obtained from the blood sample is then analyzed for lipid-associated sialic acid using a method called quantitative spectrophotometry, which allows for precise measurement of the sialic acid concentration in the serum.
