Common Language Description

The CPT® Code 84466 refers to a laboratory test specifically designed to measure the levels of transferrin in the blood. Transferrin is a glycoprotein that plays a crucial role in iron metabolism; it is primarily synthesized in the liver and is responsible for binding and transporting iron molecules throughout the bloodstream. This test is significant in diagnosing and monitoring various medical conditions. For instance, decreased transferrin levels may indicate underlying issues such as liver disease, certain types of anemia, inflammatory conditions, or malnutrition. Conversely, elevated transferrin levels can be associated with iron-overload disorders, such as hemochromatosis, where excess iron accumulates in the body. The procedure involves obtaining a blood sample through venipuncture, which is a separate reportable service. The analysis of the serum and/or plasma is conducted using a method known as quantitative immunoturbidimetry, which allows for precise measurement of transferrin concentration in the sample.
