The CPT® Code 84260 refers to a laboratory test that measures the levels of serotonin in the blood. Serotonin is a type of monoamine neurotransmitter that is synthesized from the amino acid tryptophan. The majority of serotonin is produced in the intestines, where it plays a crucial role in regulating gastrointestinal motility. Once produced, serotonin is released from intestinal cells into the bloodstream, where it is primarily carried by platelets. This transport mechanism is significant as serotonin contributes to the regulation of hemostasis, which is the process that prevents and stops bleeding, thereby aiding in blood clotting. Additionally, a smaller quantity of serotonin is produced in the central nervous system (CNS), where it is involved in various physiological functions, including the regulation of mood, appetite, and sleep patterns. Elevated serotonin levels in the blood can be indicative of several medical conditions, including intestinal obstruction, metastatic abdominal cancer, myocardial infarction (heart attack), cystic fibrosis, dumping syndrome, and non-tropical sprue. It is important to note that certain medications can influence serotonin levels if taken within 72 hours prior to the blood test. These medications include lithium, monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors, methyldopa, morphine, and reserpine, which may lead to altered test results. The blood sample for this test is obtained through a procedure known as venipuncture, which is separately reportable. The analysis of serotonin levels is conducted using a method called quantitative high-performance liquid chromatography, which allows for precise measurement of serotonin concentration in either whole blood or serum.
