Common Language Description

The CPT® Code 82735 refers to the measurement of fluoride levels in the body, which can be assessed through either a blood or urine test. Fluoride, a mineral that occurs naturally in various sources such as drinking water and certain foods, plays a significant role in dental health by helping to reduce the risk of tooth decay. In some communities, fluoride is intentionally added to the drinking water supply to enhance its protective effects against cavities. Additionally, fluoride can be consumed as a dietary supplement for the same purpose. Beyond its dental applications, fluoride is also found in various fluorine-containing compounds, which may be present in pharmaceutical products, pesticides, and other toxic chemicals. The testing process involves obtaining a blood sample through a procedure known as venipuncture, which is separately reportable. For urine testing, a random voided specimen is collected. The analysis of blood fluoride levels is conducted using quantitative ion chromatography, a precise method that quantifies the concentration of fluoride in the sample. In contrast, urine fluoride levels are measured using ion-specific electrode/colorimetry, which allows for the detection of fluoride concentration in the urine. This comprehensive approach to measuring fluoride levels is essential for assessing exposure and potential health impacts associated with fluoride consumption.
