The CPT® Code 83633 refers to a laboratory test that is specifically designed to detect and measure the presence of lactose in urine, a condition known as lactosuria. Lactose is a type of disaccharide sugar that is primarily found in milk and dairy products. In a healthy digestive system, lactose is broken down into its constituent sugars, glucose and galactose, by the enzyme lactase. However, in certain conditions, such as lactose intolerance, the body is unable to effectively break down lactose, leading to its absorption into the bloodstream and subsequent excretion in urine. This test is particularly relevant in specific populations; for instance, lactosuria can be a normal finding in late pregnancy and during lactation, especially when milk flow is obstructed. Additionally, it may occur transiently in newborn infants without any gastrointestinal symptoms. The presence of lactose in urine can indicate underlying issues related to lactose metabolism and absorption, making this test a valuable tool in diagnosing lactose intolerance and other related disorders.
